Description:
Nutmeg is a twelve week old Australian Cattle Dog (Red Heeler) likely mixed with Lab. He is a wonderful pup!
Nutmeg looooooves to give sweet puppy kisses and also adores to be snuggled. He is super sweet and loving, with a soft medium coat that is short but thick. His biggest dream is to be right by his person’s side and he enjoys the company of other dogs. Although Nutmeg has the ability to remain calm throughout an entire movie on my lap in the evening, he is an athletic and energetic pup. Nutmeg would do best placed with another dog to help show him the ropes. Or he needs an active family with older children or a person that enjoys the outdoor life to call his own. He will require some consistent training to become the best pup he can be. Please make sure you read about the Australian Cattle Dog and that you have a secure physical fence at LEAST four feet high for this super pup.
Nutmeg is quiet overnight in his crate, and is content to nap inside the crate after playtime. He is litterbox trained for now. He will need to be trained to go potty outside and pretty much everything else, after all, he is just a baby. Nutmeg is very easy to train and loves to work for your attention or treats.
If you are looking for puppy that is always calm, suited for toddlers and a couch potato lifestyle, you can stop reading now.
Also, apartment dwellers, this pup is not the right fit for you, unless: you are a marathon runner willing to take him to doggy daycare every day and you head off to mountain climbing and kayaking trips at least once a month with your faithful Nutmeg at your side. Condo dwellers, see above.
Cattle dogs are known to nip and herd (hey, that is what they were bred to do) so are not suitable for children under seven.
Or children older than that, if they cannot follow instructions not to trigger the herding instinct.
Nutmeg would do best with a person who has had a dog before, as he is a lot in one small package.
If you are a first time dog owner, Nutmeg could be the dog for you if you are able to take the time to attend training classes, from basic puppy manners and socialization all the way up to Canine Good Citizen. This at least six months of training classes so that you, the human, can learn how to be the best leader for your pup.
Nutmeg should wind up being about 55-60 pounds full grown.
Bottom line: If you have older, respectful children, a fenced in yard (no electronic fences) and love the outdoors in all kinds of weather, this dog is for you!
If you live in a condo with a small fenced space for her to potty and are a marathon runner, that might work. But, remember, we don’t know how big this pup will get, so a place with a size limit on dogs would not work.
If Nutmeg sounds like a match for you and your family please send in your application.
HDDCR requires a spay/neuter contract by the adopter if puppies and kittens in our care are too young for sterilization. This is a form the adopter signs at the time of adoption, confirming that they will get the pet spayed/neutered by a certain date. We will hold a $50 deposit on top of the adoption fee until we receive proof from a veterinarian that the dog was spayed/neutered. The $50 deposit will then be returned to the adopter.
